Dove hunting can be an excellent bonding opportunity for parents and children. The experience can also turn dangerous if the proper precautions are not taken. Follow these tips for dove hunting with children to keep your outing safe and fun.

Stay Safe

Safety is the number one component of having fun while hunting with your kids. A serious conversation about gun safety must take place before any outing. Children should understand why guns are appropriate for use while hunting but not during other times and should fully understand the mechanics of the firearm. A 12- or 16-gauge shotgun is best for dove hunting and should be explained to the child before heading out.

Both children and adults should be outfitted in florescent orange clothing made of durable material that can protect against the elements and poisonous plants. Insect repellent and sunscreen should be frequently applied and a first aid kit should be a staple in your hunting pack.

Make Hunting Fun

The excitement of the prospect of going hunting quickly wears off for many children as they are forced to wait silently in the woods for hours. Pack plenty of quiet activities like word searches or coloring books to keep kids still and occupied throughout the day.

Being the first to spot a flock of doves is a real thrill for a child. Provide binoculars and teach kids the best places to scout for their targets, like grain fields or ditches near tree lines.
